The Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information Technology have four main areas of responsibility.
Minister Austin Gatt is designated as the political champion of the application of information and communication technologies within the Government and the broad national community and economy at large. The Minister leads the Governments efforts to:
- Develop further the Maltese information society and economy, locally and within the international arena, making the Maltese experience a best practice to be followed by other countries;
- Strengthen the role of ICT in Government not only to improve service delivery but as a tool of extending democracy and accountability, eradicating clientalism and realise efficiency gains; and
- Transform Malta into a regional technology centre of excellence for systems development, training specialisations and service provision in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
The Ministry is also responsible to ensure the national interest in the policy setting and operations of those entities, owned or partly owned by the Government. These include the suppliers of major utilities (Enemalta, Water Service Corporation), the major marine-related industries (Malta Drydocks, Malta Shipbuilding, Malta Freeport, Gozo Channel, Tug Malta), the major aviation industries (Air Malta, Malta Air Traffic Services, Malta International Airport) and the national broadcaster (PBS) and several others.
Minister Gatt has set out his strategic objectives to establish the roadmap of the Ministry's operations. The Ministry aims to ensure that all public entities within its remit:
- Operate within a sustainable and cost-efficient environment, balancing the social obligations of the organisation and its invariable need to have a black bottom line;
- Improve service delivery in a visible and tangible manner for the internal and external clients of the organisation;
- Enhance organisational effectiveness across a number of key areas in management within a corporate ethical culture; and
- Strive to improve the quality of working life of the employees of the organisation.
The Ministry became responsible for the Privatisation Unit on the March 23, 2004.
Malta Enterprise, Investment Promotion and Industry were added to the Ministry's portfolio since July 4, 2004.
